Pilgrims Battle to 1-1 Draw With Sharks

BOSTON, MASS. - The New England College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the Simmons University Sharks on Saturday afternoon. The Pilgrims now hold a 0-1-1 record in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

The teams would battle in the first half with the Sharks testing the defense early by firing multiple shots on target. Pilgrims' goalkeeper senior Hollie Bomba (Seymour, Conn.) made several crucial saves to keep the Sharks off the scoreboard. Senior Mia Loewenberg (Milford, Conn.) responded with back-to-back shots on goal, pressuring the Sharks' defense, but goalkeeper Lauren Sanchez held her ground. Both sides would earn corner kicks, pushing for the opening goal, but strong goalkeeping on both ends kept the game scoreless heading into halftime.

The 'Grims opened the second half by bringing the offensive pressure as sophomore Michelina Follis (Saugus, Mass.) would take advantage of a foul committed by the Sharks and fired a shot, but Sanchez made another key save to keep the score at 0-0. In the 73rd minute, the Sharks broke through, finding the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.  The Pilgrims kept the offensive intensity high as senior Isabella MacGregor (Ottawa, Ont.) fired a shot that was blocked by Sanchez, but moments later a penalty committed in the box by the Sharks gave the 'Grims the opportunity to even the score. Freshman Amanda Roy (Fitzwilliam, N.H.) would take the penalty kick for the Pilgrims and buried the ball in the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 11 minutes remaining. The 'Grims continued their offensive attack as sophomore Abbey Keyes (Dedham, Mass.) connected on a header off a corner kick that narrowly missed the target. The teams battled hard in the closing minutes, but neither team could break the deadlock and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Pilgrims return home on Tuesday in a non-conference match up as they host the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a 7:00 PM start.
