HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College women's volleyball team found themselves back in the win column as they defeated the Husson University Eagles three sets to zero with set scores of 25-12, 25-20, and 26-24 at Bridges Gymnasium.
The Pilgrims started the match with two quick points before Husson came back to tie. The teams traded points until NEC jumped out to a 13-5 lead, led by two kills from junior Tyra Kelly (Fresno, Calif.) and an additional one from freshman Teagan Saner (Plains, Mont.). Junior Samantha Winters (Dover, N.H.) finished the first set with six kills as the Pilgrims kept the momentum going into the second.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second set as Peyton Hooker was able to get an ace on NEC's defense before the Pilgrims tied it up. Both teams exchanged points until NEC went on a five-point run led by kills from junior Maeve Amarosa (Madbury, N.H.) and senior Jamie Hansen (New Underwood, S.D.). A run from Husson led to a chance for the Pilgrims to extend their lead. They got up to a 21-12 lead before Husson got within four points in the set. A serving error by the Eagles gave the Pilgrims the 25th point of the set.
The third set started with both teams trading points until the Eagles took an 8-4 lead off of multiple Janna Preskorn service aces. The Pilgrims fought back and stayed behind until they tied the set at 22. Hansen, Winters, Amarosa, and senior Kaylee Montgomery (Weare, N.H.) led the charge with a combined nine kills. Attack errors from Husson gave the Pilgrims the final two points they needed to secure the sweep.
Winters tied her career high in kills with twelve on the night while her, Montgomery, senior Aurora Gutierrez-Macias (El Paso, Tex.) and junior Molly Gamache (Weare, N.H.) all collected a service ace in the win.
