HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College women's soccer team improved to 3-2-1 with their third shutout of the season over Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday night on the Don Melander Field.
NEC dominated the time of possession in the first 10 minutes of the game, firing off three shots and earning a corner kick, though they were unable to turn it into an early go-ahead goal. Massachusetts Maritime put two shots on net over the succeeding 10 minutes, but both were saved by senior Hollie Bomba (Seymour, Conn.). Both keepers made two saves in the first half as the scoreless draw continued into halftime.
With around 34 minutes to go, freshman Amanda Roy (Fitzwilliam, N.H.) sent a cross toward the Mass Maritime net, but the Bucs deflected the ball out of bounds for an NEC corner. On the corner kick, graduate Shelby McBain (Indianhead, Md.) sent a perfect ball to the far post of the Bucs net and found freshman Estrella Michaelidis (Dedham, Mass.) who headed in the first goal of her collegiate career to put the 'Grims up 1-0.
In the 69th minute, Roy jumpstarted another NEC scoring opportunity with a cross into the middle. Michaelidis gathered the pass and took a shot but was blocked by a jumping defender, but Michaelidis kept fighting and pushed the ball back to sophomore Abbey Keyes (Dedham, Mass.). Keyes wasted no time before sending a left-footed one-timer into the bottom right corner of the Buccaneers net for the 2-0 lead.
Bomba made one final save in the 85th minute to secure her third shutout of the season in net.
NEC now looks ahead to their next game on Saturday at 3:00 PM in Weston, Massachusetts as they face the Pride of Regis College as they resume conference play.
