NEW LONDON, N.H. – The New England College baseball team dropped a pair of contests to Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday, first resuming play in the seventh inning of an unfinished game from April fourth, followed by a non-conference seven-inning nightcap at the Kelsey Baseball Field in New London, New Hampshire.
GAME 1 – Colby-Sawyer 11, New England College 8
- The first six innings of this game were played on April 4th before the game was suspended due to darkness. Prior to the stoppage, Colby-Sawyer had jumped out to a 9-4 lead. For the Pilgrims, junior outfielder Harold Martinez (Wethersfield, Conn.) delivered an RBI single in the first, sophomore catcher Mike Monteforte (Wilmington, Mass.) smacked an RBI double in the fourth, and graduate infielder Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) followed by driving in two more runs on a single.
- Resuming play in the top of the seventh, senior pitcher Austin Hazzard (Weare, N.H.) took the ball for the Pilgrims and struck out three Chargers in a clean inning. In the top of the eighth, Colby-Sawyer put four runners on base to eventually push two more runs across.
- Trailing 4-11, NEC loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, and, with two outs, junior outfielder Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.) scored two runs on a double to right center field. The next batter, freshman Jaken Pellerin (Manchester, N.H.) smacked a single to left center to score two more runs.
- After a four-run bottom of the eighth, the 'Grims brought a three-run deficit to the ninth. Walks of junior catcher Jackson Round (Cayuga, Canada) and senior outfielder Kyle Dobrie (Mastic, N.Y.) brought the tying run to the plate, but the Chargers were able to escape with the GNAC victory after back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Colby-Sawyer pitcher Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) covered five innings, five days apart, allowing three earned runs while striking out 11 Pilgrims to earn the win. NEC graduate pitcher Nolan Stoney (Bedford, N.H.) was handed the loss.
- Both Cote and Pellerin went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Cote added two runs scored. Cannavo went 1-for-5 with two RBIs.
- Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) had a big game for the Chargers, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored.
GAME 2 – New England College 5, Colby-Sawyer 7
- Game two saw the Pilgrims, who were now officially acting as the road team, jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a double by junior utilityman David Spigel (Portsmouth, R.I.) to score sophomore utilityman Nick Becker (Portland, Maine), who had reached on a double of his own, and junior outfielder Noah Winship (Rochester, N.H.).
- In the bottom of the second, Colby-Sawyer rallied behind four hits for an immediate response of two runs to tie the game up. The Chargers would take the lead in the third as they capitalized on a pair of Pilgrim errors to go up, 3-2.
- Down 6-2 in the fifth, Round doubled home Cannavo, and senior infielder Tyler Fenton (Wilmington, Mass.) drove in Pellerin to pull the 'Grims within two runs entering the sixth. One more Charger run in the bottom of the sixth would have NEC facing a three-run deficit in the seventh.
- Pellerin led off the top of the seventh with his GNAC-leading 11th double of the season before being replaced by pinch-runner, freshman Kaeden Elmer (Bedford, N.H.). Round singled to advance Elmer to second and two batters later, Elmer would score on an RBI single by Becker. However, the game came to an end two batters later when Becker was picked off at first.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Colby-Sawyer's Colin Burchard (Upton, Mass.) only went three innings on the mound for the Chargers yet was given the win. Seven different pitchers threw for the Pilgrims with sophomore pitcher Colby Rohr (Highland Village, Tex.) taking the loss in relief.
- NEC received scoreless innings from sophomore Paul Foster (Billerica, Mass.), senior Liam Bruskewicz (Granite Springs, N.Y.), sophomore Liam Shaw (Colebrook, N.H.), and Stoney. Foster struck out two of the three batters he faced.
- Becker had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored, and a walk. The sophomore achieved his first multi-hit game of his career by the fourth inning.
- Round also netted his first career two-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double and one run driven in.
