Lasell Sweeps Baseball on Senior Day

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College baseball team was handed a senior day sweep by Lasell University on Saturday, first dropping a nine-inning conference game followed by a seven-inning non-conference tout.

GAME 1 – Lasell 10, NEC 0

  • After scoring a run in the second inning on an NEC error, Lasell added another in the third on a solo home run by CJ Mills (Waltham, Mass.). A sacrifice fly in the fourth would be the third consecutive one-run inning for the Lasers.
  • A double down the right field line that just cleared the first base bag scored two more runs for the visitors in the top of the sixth. The Lasers tacked on two more in the seventh, one in the eighth, and two in the ninth to secure the game one shutout win, 10-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Lasell starting pitcher Matthew Fletcher (Wethersfield, Conn.) threw seven scoreless innings to earn the win, allowing just four hits while striking out eight. Junior pitcher Christopher Chagnon (Portsmouth, R.I.) covered six-and-one-third innings for the 'Grims and suffered the loss.
  • Senior Connor Frietas (Portsmouth, R.I.) and graduate Ross Audet (Swansea, Mass.) each had three hits for the Lasers. Senior Pierce Clare (Middletown, R.I.) had three runs driven in.
  • NEC senior infielder Tyler Fenton (Wilmington, Mass.) smacked a double to left center field on his senior day.
  • Junior outfielder Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.) robbed the Lasers of extra bases multiple times out in centerfield.
  • Both teams committed three errors apiece.

GAME 2 – Lasell 12, NEC 3

  • After a pair of scoreless innings, the Lasers broke through with seven runs in the top of the third. Graduate Scott Lyon (Weston, Conn.) produced the exclamation mark in the fourth with a three-run home run to straightaway centerfield. They added a couple more in the fifth and the sixth to jump ahead, 12-0.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, senior Austin Hazzard (Weare, N.H.) drew a walk and senior Liam Bruskewicz (Granite Springs, N.Y.) drove a single a single up the middle. Two batters later, junior catcher Jackson Round (Cayuga, Canada) mashed his first career home run to dead center field to score pinch-runners Nolan Stoney (Bedford, N.H.) and Max Francisco (Hudson, N.H.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Junior Luke Deschaneaux (Lowell, Mass.) went the distance for the Lasers, going seven innings with three earned runs. NEC sophomore pitcher Colby Rohr (Highland Village, Tex.) was dealt the loss.
  • Bruskewicz and freshman infielder Kaeden Elmer (Bedford, N.H.) each tallied two hits.
  • Freshman infielder Jackson Piro (Columbia, Conn.) recorded his first career hit in the bottom of the sixth.

SENIOR DAY

  • Prior to the game, the baseball team and the NEC athletics department recognized a group of six graduating seniors as part of senior day. Those honored included Hazzard, Bruskewicz, Fenton, senior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.), senior outfielder Kyle Dobrie (Mastic, N.Y.), senior infielder Tyler Fenton (Wilmington, Mass.), and senior pitcher Corey O'Day (Nashua, N.H.).
