Women’s Lacrosse Secures Conference Win in Convincing Fashion Over Albertus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The New England College women's lacrosse team picks up a win on the road at Albertus Magnus College dominating the Falcons in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday at Celentano Field in New Haven, Connecticut.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 18, Albertus Magnus College 3
Records: Pilgrims 3-1, 1-0 GNAC | Falcons 0-3, 0-1 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • At 10:27 of the first quarter the 'Grims would strike first on the day. NEC senior defender Mary High (Plymouth, Mass.) would make her way down the field to complete the teams clear attempt and make a sharp pass over to sophomore midfielder Carmela Goodwin (Lebanon, N.H.). It didn't take much time for NEC to find the back of the net once more. NEC junior attacker Mackenzie McDonald (Boscawen, N.H.) would hold the ball behind the net and make run for it to the right side to loop around and score the second goal of the game.
  • NEC would hold onto the lead for the rest of the quarter but without the Falcons acquiring a goal of their own before the first quarter concluded. A costly turnover by NEC led to AMC sophomore defender Briony Retasket (Beaverton, Ore.) charging down the field with nobody unable to stop her from scoring the first goal for the Falcons, 2-1. NEC picked their heads up not letting the previous goal deter them. With just seconds left on the clock the 'Grims were able to get one more shot off and it was taken by none other than Goodwin to put NEC out in front by two, 3-1.
  • AMC managed to retaliate rather quickly at the start of the second quarter only needing 16 seconds to get their offense going once again. The Falcons freshman Delaney Schlechtweg (Goshen, N.Y.) would win the draw control and advance the AMC possession into NEC's defensive territory and located Retasket who would be a position to score the second goal of the game for AMC, 3-2. NEC did a good job staying composed and finding ways to create scoring opportunities for three 'Grims in graduate midfielder Annalisa Crooks (Nantucket, Mass.), McDonald, and Goodwin establishing a four-goal lead, 6-2 going into halftime.
  • The third quarter was an absolute display of offensive dominance performed by the 'Grims shutting out the Falcons while NEC would fire on all cylinders, scoring eight consecutive goals. NEC attacker Lucy Armour (Falmouth, Mass.) would get involved in the scoring mix earning a hat trick in just one quarter of action, Goodwin scored two and McDonald recorded three to secure a comfortable lead, 14-2.
  • NEC Armour would add to her total with another goal that would shortly be followed by freshman attacker Lilly Vaughn (Belmont, N.H.) scoring a goal along with Goodwin. The team had one blemish in the entire half as the Falcons scored their first goal of the entire second half of play with 8:10 remaining, 17-3. From there on the final goal of the game came from McDonald that solidified the teams first conference win of the season smothering the Falcons from start to finish offensively and defensively on the day, 18-3.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Easy day at the office for junior goalkeeper Isabella Marzano (Warwick, R.I.) obtaining three saves.
  • AMC sophomore goalkeeper Sophia McDermott (Northford, Conn.) did all she could for the Falcons in between the pipes finishing with 11 saves.
  • NEC McDonald had herself another phenomenal game for the 'Grims securing the game-high in points contributing eight off six goals and two assists. Goodwin was just as spectacular for NEC earning six goals of her own while Armour would follow up with four goals.
  • Shots on the day strongly favored the 'Grims, 41-11.
  • NEC had a stellar outing today with clears completing all their clears with no flaws going 8-for-8 while the Falcons were 5-for-7.
  • NEC had a distinct advantage in groundballs over AMC, 32-18.
  • Turnovers proved to be a  hindrance  on the Falcons, committing 28 compared to NEC's 18.
  • NEC led in draw controls over AMC, 14-11.
