Cardinals Outlast Men’s Lacrosse

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The New England College men's lacrosse team lost 14-10 at Plattsburgh State in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at the Field House Complex in Plattsburgh, New York.

THE BASICS
Score:                  New England College 10, Plattsburgh State 14
Records:              Pilgrims 3-5, 0-2 GNAC | Cardinals 4-3, 0-0 SUNYAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down 4-3 after the first quarter, the Pilgrims soon found themselves in a dogfight. Every time it appeared they might close the gap, the Cardinals would respond with an insurance goal. Every time it appeared the hosts might pull away, NEC would find the answer, staying in the game. The teams entered the fourth quarter with the 'Grims once again trailing by one at 10-9.
  • In the fourth, Plattsburgh State sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Gipe (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) gave the Cardinals a much-needed insurance goal just eight seconds in to increase the lead to two. With under twelve minutes remaining in the game, Plattsburgh added two more from sophomore midfielder Peter Urso (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and sophomore attacker Dylan Ruland (Medford, N.Y.), respectively. A goal by NEC senior attacker Matt Daley (Plymouth, Mass.) with 3:13 left was not enough to close the gap, and the Pilgrims came up just short.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC sophomore goalkeeper Nate Finn (Norwood, Mass.), returning in net for his first action of the season for the 'Grims, posted a strong performance with 16 saves, good for a .533 save percentage.
  • Plattsburgh sophomore goalkeeper Cole Orehosky (Hauppauge, N.Y.) finished with two stops for the Cardinals.
  • NEC junior midfielder Daniel Varga (Hampton, N.J.) led the Pilgrims with three goals and three assists. At press time, Varga leads the 'Grims with 42 points on the season.
  • Gipe led the Cardinals with five goals while Urso added four goals and one assist.
  • NEC senior attacker Henri Pfeifle (Darien, Conn.) added two goals, two assists and two caused turnovers. Junior defender Ethan LaHaye (Grantham, N.H.) posted a team-high five groundballs.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Saturday when they play host to Anna Maria College in conference action back in Henniker. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
  • Plattsburgh plays their next game at SUNY Oneonta on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
