A Quick Look
The New England College softball team completed their spring trip portion of the schedule today pulling out a split of games versus St. Lawrence University and Farmingdale State. In their first game of the day, the Pilgrims fell to St. Lawrence, 6-2, before bouncing back to defeat Farmingdale 3-2. The split for the day gives the 'Grims a 4-10 record overall, as they head back to New Hampshire tomorrow.
The Inside Story
Game 1 – St. Lawrence 6, NEC 2
The Pilgrims took advantage of an extra out to grab an early 2-0 lead after the first inning. With one out, sophomore
Kate Gagne reached on a fielding error by the pitcher and moved to second base when classmate
Abigail Grimes walked. The next batter was junior
Emma Lopez who hit a deep ball to the fence for a double to drive in Gagne while advancing Grimes to third base. Junior
Surena Montero did her job and hit a fly ball to right field that scored Grimes for the second run.
The Saints plated a single run in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by junior Layne Fritz. They added another run in their half of the third to even the score at 2-2.
The score remained the same entering the seventh inning where the Saints posted four runs to take a 6-2 lead. In the inning, sophomore Maeve Thompson and senior Stella VanGee each doubled to drive in runs.
Junior Grace Gielser hit a one-out single in the home half of the seventh but was stranded at second base.
Freshman
Amanda Magro had another solid outing until the last inning where the Saints broke through for the four runs on five hits. Magro recorded a pair of strikeouts and allowed 10 hits and four earned runs falling to 1-3 in the early season.
Game 2 – NEC 3, Farmingdale 2
Another strong outing for senior pitcher
Olivia Olson and some timely hitting gave the Pilgrims the victory versus Farmingdale. Olson won her third game of the trip striking out three and allowing only six hits.
Trailing 2-1 entering the top of the sixth inning, Giesler got things started with a lead off triple to left field. Giesler came in to score on an RBI single by Grimes to tie the score at two apiece.
With two outs in the seventh, Giesler came through again when she hit a single that drove in junior
Julia Maker to put the 'Grims ahead 3-2. Maker hit a one-out double to right-center field to get herself into scoring position.
The Saints had the tying run at second base with two outs before Olson handled a pop up to end the game.
Just the Stats
Seven of the nine hitters in the starting lineup recorded a hit versus St. Lawrence.
Giesler was the offensive star of the Farmingdale contest with two of the team's five hits including the hit to score the eventual game-winning run and scoring two of the three runs.
What's Next
The Pilgrims will now have some time off before their first scheduled game up north on Saturday, Apr. 29
th when they travel to Connecticut to Face Albertus Magnus to open GNAC play.
