MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The New England College baseball team came through with an exciting walk-off win in 11 innings over Manhattanville University on Tuesday morning in a continuation of their Spring Break trip in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
THE BASICS
Score: Manhattanville 6, New England College 7
Records: Valiants 4-3 | Pilgrims 2-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A 0-0 game after three, Manhattanville scored one run in the fourth before the Pilgrims scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. After putting two baserunners on, graduate infielder Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) doubled home the first run while a sacrifice fly from senior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) plated the second.
- Senior pitcher Liam Bruskewicz (Granite Springs, N.Y.), making his first start of the season for the 'Grims, pitched into the eighth inning while allowing just one earned run. An unearned run in the eighth would knock Bruskewicz out of the game and knot the score up at 2-2.
- The Valiants would put a runner on base in the top of the ninth to apply some pressure to reliever Isaias Nuño (Rialto, Calif.), but junior David Spigel (Portsmouth, R.I.) made a remarkable diving catch and turn a double play to get the 'Grims out of the inning.
- Manhattanville would really apply the pressure in the top of the 10th inning, capitalizing on a pair of Pilgrim errors to score three runs and take control with a 5-2 lead.
- In search of a rally in the bottom of the tenth, junior outfielder Harold Martinez (Wethersfield, Conn.) took a leadoff walk, followed by a Cannavo hit-by pitch and a Philibotte single to load the bases. Junior Yeri Ramos (Yoiza, P.R.) would score Martinez on a fielder's choice and two batters later, graduate utilityman Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.) doubled to left center to plate both Cannavo and Ramos to tie the game and send it to the 11th inning.
- The visitors retook the lead in the top of the inning, 6-5. In the bottom-half, sophomore Mike Monteforte (Wilmington, Mass.) walked and later scored on a single by Cannavo. Senior infielder Tyler Fenton (Wilmington, Mass.) pinch-ran for Cannavo and Fenton would turn on the burners as Philibotte drilled a ball off the wall in left-center field. Fenton would beat the relay and Philibotte would record the walk-off hit.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
