Johnson, V.T. - The New England College Women's Basketball team traveled north to play Vermont State University – Johnson on Thursday evening.
The Badgers held their one and only lead to start the first with a three pointer until senior Ajayah Lively (Victorville, Calif.) was able to tie the game with a three pointer of her own. The team led by as much as 11 in the first and scored 25 points, five of which were Lively's.
Going into the second, the Pilgrims kept their momentum going with two three by senior Macy Gordon (Boscawen, N.H.) and a couple of points from junior Nyah Belton (Colton, Calif.). Going into halftime, the team led the Badgers by 26 points and kept them to six points. Gordon scored 10 of her 14 points in the second period, who led the 'Grims in points tonight.
Senior Mackenzie McDonald (Boscawen, N.H.) extended the lead for NEC to start the third period now leading 47-19. The women kept their foot on the gas pedal the entire game, but VTSU-Johnson was able to score 14 in the period led by Kristie Zator with six. On the 'Grims side Lively, McDonald, and Gordon each had four.
The fourth got started by a layup made by junior Camryn Lewis (Taunton, Mass.) who got the 'Grims over 60 and increased the lead to 28. Then Lively followed up with two fastbreaks. After six minutes in the fourth sophomore Ter'Nazia Elvine (Cochran, Ga.) made a three pointer which gained the 'Grims their largest lead of the night with 38, and keeping the Badgers to seven points. The final: 72-40. Lewis led with 14 rebounds and six assists. Lively had 12 points on the night with McDonald not far behind with 10.
NEC is now 7-3, and 5-1 on the road as they finish out the first half of the season at Anna Maria College on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
