NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The New England College men's ice hockey team suffered a second straight loss on the road in Little East Conference (LEC) action, falling to Norwich 2-0 on Saturday from Kreitzberg Arena in Northfield, Vermont.
After a scoreless first period, the Cadets put two goals in the back of the net in the second period to take control of the game. 6:23 into the period, Cole Fagan gave Norwich the lead with his first goal of the season and, at 10:16 in the second, Cory Kashul gave the hosts a two-goal lead with his first of the new campaign.
The Pilgrims would attempt to claw back into the game in the third period but were unable to convert. Their lone power play was killed midway through the period, while the final 2:14 of the game, a 6-on-5 with the goalie off the ice, also failed to produce a goal.
Norwich outshot NEC, 21-12, on net in the second period, while they held a narrow 15-14 advantage across periods one and three, combined. The decisive second period would be the difference in the game as Norwich improved to 2-0 in conference play while the 'Grims fell to 0-2.
In goal for the Pilgrims, sophomore Anthony Beaulieu (Lawrence, Mass.) made 34 saves while giving up both Norwich goals – good for a .944 save percentage. Norwich goaltender Sami Molu made 27 stops in the shutout. The two goalkeepers will meet again on January 23rd in Henniker.
The team continues LEC action next Friday as they host UMass-Boston for their home opener at Lee Clement Arena with a 7:00 PM start time.
