Pilgrims Outlast Wolves in 2-1 Win

HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College men's ice hockey team earned its first Little East Conference (LEC) win on Friday night, defeating the Western Connecticut State University Wolves 2-1.

Blake Alexander put the visiting Wolves on the board first, scoring five minutes into the opening period. The Pilgrims responded with a series of shots, all turned away by WestConn goaltender Liam Lane. The Wolves committed a penalty late in the period, providing the 'Grims with a power play opportunity that led to a goal from junior Gunnar Sibley (Monticello, Minn.) to even the score at 1-1. WestConn continued to pressure the NEC defense, but sophomore goaltender Anthony Beaulieu (Lawrence, Mass.) made the saves, sending the teams into the first intermission knotted at 1-1.

The Pilgrims kept the pressure on WestConn, firing shots from sophomore Vesse-Wincent Lampen (Espoo, Finland) and freshman Matteo Viglino (Davos, Switzerland) that were stopped by Lane. Junior Jack Herron (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) netted the 'Grims second goal of the game to give to take the 2-1 lead with assists from sophomore Egor Osipik (Minsk, Belarus) and Viglino. The Wolves responded with several shots, but Sibley and sophomore Bryce Sturm (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) blocked the shots. The teams continued to trade shots late in the period as NEC carried a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

The Wolves opened the third period with a shot that Beaulieu saved, followed by shots from junior Dylan Duckson (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and senior Graham Hassan (Pinckney, Mich.) that were blocked by the WestConn defense. Both teams continued to trade shots as the period went on, but strong defensive play at both ends kept the puck out of the net. The visitors pulled their goaltender in the final minutes of action, looking to tie the score, but Herron and freshman Jack Brennan (Hingham, Mass.) blocked the shots as the Pilgrims secured the 2-1 victory.

Sibley and Herron each scored for the Pilgrims, while Osipik tallied a pair of assists. Brennan paced the team with four blocked shots, and Beaulieu finished the night with 25 saves in net.

The Pilgrims continue LEC competition, hosting the Keene State Owls on Saturday with a 4:00 PM start.
