HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College field hockey team picked up a 3-0 victory over the University of Maine – Farmington on Sunday afternoon. The Pilgrims improve their overall record to 9-3.
The Pilgrims wasted no time putting the pressure on the Beavers' defense as sophomore Kennedy Overhoff (Whitefield, N.H.) fired an early shot on goal, forcing a save from Beavers goalkeeper Ella Grant. Moments later, sophomore Kira Geddes (Bow, N.H.) followed up with a shot over own that Grant stopped, but Geddes capitalized on the rebound sending the ball into the back of the cage to give the 'Grims a 1-0 lead. The Beavers responded with a penatly corner, but the Pilgrims' defense held strong, blocking the attempt. The Pilgrims continued to fire shots in the opening quarter, but Grant made the saves to keep the score at 1-0.
The 'Grims continued their offensive attack as senior Tatum Golis (New Hartford, N.Y.) fired a shot that was saved by Grant, but the rebound led to junior Kacey McClay (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) netting her seventh goal of the season, extending the lead to 2-0. The Pilgrims maintained the pressure, with both Overhoff and Golis challenging the Beavers' backline, but the shots would be blocked.
The third quarter saw both teams battling for control as junior Adelaide Kelly (Rockport, Maine) came up the rebound and delivered the Pilgrims third goal of the game to extend their lead to 3-0. The Beavers responded with a shot of their own, but senior goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) made the save to preserve the shutout.
Geddes opened the final quarter with consecutive shots, both denied by the Beavers defense. In the closing minutes, freshman Madison Brown (Goffstown, N.H.) fired a shot, but Grant came up with the save.
Anderson finished the afternoon with one save, while Grant tallied seven saves for the Beavers in net.
The Pilgrims will now take a brief break before returning to action on Saturday when they host Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Lasell at Don Melander Field. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
