NASHUA, N.H. - The New England College men's soccer team engaged in a defensive battle at Rivier University resulting in a draw in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday evening at Merrill Field in Nashua, New Hampshire.
THE BASICS
Score: New England College 0, Rivier University 0
Records: Pilgrims 2-2-2, 1-1-1 GNAC | Raiders 2-1-3, 0-1-2 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half between the Pilgrims and Raiders was quiet on the offensive end for both teams. The two teams combined for just two shots on goal in the half – both by the Pilgrims. Senior midfielder Darren Mota (Inverness, Scotland) took a shot on goal in the 10th minute, and sophomore midfielder Jack LaBroad (East Kingston, N.H.) ripped an impressive strike on net in the 34th minute, but both were saved by familiar face Logan Clough (Hillsborough, N.H.) in the net for Rivier.
- Out of the break, Rivier's Kamar Matthew-Murray had a pair of strong shot opportunities: in the 55th minute, senior goalkeeper Hayden Walker (Manchester, N.H.) saved his shot attempt, pushing it just over the crossbar and out of trouble; in the 59th minute, Matthew-Murray again targeted the top of the NEC net but aimed just high as it bounced off the top crossbar without Walker needing to make a touch.
- In the 75th minute, Walker made a save on a header off a Rivier corner to preserve the 0-0 score. Not even 30 seconds later, the scoreless battle would see its best scoring chance as the 'Grims would be awarded a penalty shot when freshman midfielder Ndhego Zikusoka (Entebbe, Uganda) drew a foul on a fast break run into the Rivier box. The penalty kick was taken by reigning GNAC player of the week, sophomore midfielder Santiago Sanchez (Guatemala City, Guatemala), but Sanchez' attempt was denied by Clough on a diving save. Neither team could manage a shot on target over the final 15 minutes of action to secure the 0-0 draw.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Walker made two saves for the 'Grims for his second consecutive shutout.
- Clough stopped three shots in net for the Raiders.
- Both teams received five corners on the night. NEC ever-so-slightly out-shot RIvier, 3-1, on net.
- Rivier was perhaps overly aggressive in this one, recording 15 fouls to NEC's seven, and being handed two yellow cards.
- NEC has now gone three straight contests without allowing a goal. Specifically, they have held their opponents scoreless over the last 274 minutes of game action dating back to a matchup against Fitchburg State on September 10th.
