Field Hockey Defeats Dean in Conference Opener

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College field hockey team opened their conference schedule with a win against visiting Dean College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score: Dean College: 0, New England College: 7
Records: Bulldogs: 2-4, 0-1 GNAC | Pilgrims 5-1, 1-0 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The scoring was started early by midfielder Meaghan McCamish (Warwick, R.I.), who found the ball right in front of the goal and buried one just 2:29 into the game, assisted by sophomore forward Adelaide Kelly (Rockport, Maine).
  • Kelly jumped into the scoring party with two goals in the win, sneaking the first just past junior goalkeeper Allie Stockwell around the 3:57 mark in the first quarter with her second one assisted by McCamish in the fourth quarter. Her second goal was scored as McCamish completed a cross-crease pass for Kelly to slam it home.
  • Sophomore forward Kylee Henriquez (Methuen, Mass.) scored her first three goals of her career after intercepting a pass and burying it on a breakaway for her first. Her second came off a one-timer from a pass from graduate forward Drea Chin with just 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The hat trick was completed with just under eight minutes left in the game as she won a fight up front to poke the ball in past the Dean goalkeeper, with an assist credited to junior defender Isabella Marzano (Warwick, R.I.).
  • Senior midfielder Taylor Bailey (Boscawen, N.H.) recorded her third goal of the season in a bang-bang play in the fourth quarter to extend the Pilgrims lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Junior goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) started for NEC but the Pilgrims defense held the Bulldogs to zero shots in the first half. She was relieve by freshman goalkeeper Emily Keefe (South Portland, Maine) in the second, who saved the only one shot on goal she faced to keep the shutout alive.
  • Dean goalie freshman Sara Gardner made eight saves on eleven shots after replacing Stockwell, who allowed four goals on six shot attempts.
  • New England College kept the pressure throughout the game as they finished with 23 total shots to Dean's three.
  • The Bulldogs had their share of cards, as sophomore Tristyn Williams collected both green and yellow cards, while sophomore Emily Kilpatrick was issued a yellow card.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the field on Wednesday, September 18 when they travel to Anna Maria College to take on the AMCATS.
  • Dean plays their next game at Grant Field as they host the Raiders of Rivier University.
