Olson Pitches Softball Past Rivier in GNAC Playoffs

NASHUA, N.H. – The New England College softball team beat host Rivier University 3-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship Tournament Play-In Round on Tuesday evening at Raider Diamond in Nashua, New Hampshire, advancing to the North Division elimination round. The Pilgrims, entering the tournament as the fifth-seed in the GNAC North Division, move on with a 15-22 record, and will travel to Saint Joseph's College on Thursday to face the Monks, the top-seed in the North Division.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pilgrims were down 1-0 in the top of the third when NEC sophomore shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) came to the plate with no outs and a runner on and belted a double to right field to plate graduate leftfielder Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.), tying the game up. On the very next at-bat, sophomore catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) stepped to the plate and hit an RBI double to right center, giving the 'Grims their first lead of the game. Two batters later, NEC picked up an insurance run when Lopez scored on an error, giving the visitors a 3-1 lead.
  • That would be all the help NEC junior pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.), last week's GNAC Pitcher of the Week, would need. Continuing her dominant performance of late, Olson allowed just four hits and no earned runs over seven innings for the Pilgrims, driving her team to the GNAC double-elimination round in just their first season in the league.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Olson has now pitched an astonishing 28 straight innings since last giving up an earned run.
  • Lopez and Giesler both finished with two hits on the night, with Lopez finishing with two doubles.
  • Gagne tallied two stolen bases, continuing to set new highs in the Pilgrim record books.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Thursday when they travel to St. Joseph's College of Maine for a 3:30 p.m. game in the GNAC playoffs double-elimination round.
