Men’s Lacrosse Endures Tough Road Loss against Saints

BOSTON, Mass. – The New England College men's lacrosse team suffered a loss on the road in a game in which they never led at Emmanuel College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday evening at the Roberto Clemente Field in Boston, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 10, Emmanuel College 15
Records: Pilgrims 2-7, 1-3 GNAC | Saints 2-9, 2-3 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emmanuel started the game by scoring the first two goals, both from freshman attacker Tyler Cardinal (Rochester, Mass.). Four seconds after the faceoff via Cardinal's second goal, junior attacker Thomas Norton (Mansfield, Mass.) struck in the 'Grims first goal of the night as senior face-off specialist Evan Zonderman (Dracut, Mass.) was credited on the assist. A few plays later, the Saints would answer with a man-up goal by way of a penalty to give themselves a steady 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The second period of play picked up more action on the Roberto Clemente Field, with more apparent leverage on the home team. NEC's junior attacker Henri Pfeifle (Darien, Conn.) did put a dent in Emmauel's lead 6:02 into the quarter with a much-needed goal to only have his team down two again when Saints' junior attacker Ryan Etzo (Bedford, N.H.) answered 57 seconds later to put his team up 4-2. Pfiefle would take matters into his own hands and respond to get the 'Grims back within one. Things would go lopsided in the favor of Emmanuel as they connected on six straight goals in the final 5:29 left to play in the half where freshman attacker Cooper Mehlhorn (South Portland, Maine) contributed on two of them and would have his squad up 9-3 going into halftime.
  • Coming out of halftime, the Saints would keep their momentum going as they snuck in another two goals in the first 4:18 to enjoy a pleasant 11-3 lead. Not a minute later, senior midfielder Joey Olsen (Mansfield, Mass.) would stop the bleeding caused by the opponent's run. Emmanuel's senior attacker Thomas Quigley (Marblehead, Mass.) would condemn any comeback efforts as he put in a goal of his own. Fortunately for NEC, their season-leading scorer would give the team their best run on the evening as Pfeifle scored on two of the 'Grims three goals in the final 5:42 of the third period of play as sophomore midfielder Nathan Hawkins (Salisbury, N.H.) contributed on the other to be down 12-7.
  • The whole fourth quarter scoring was all back and forth between the two teams with each putting up three scores to have a no gain/loss in the scoring margin. Pfiefle would end his day on a hard-fought note with two more goals to add to his arsenal with Norton getting his second of the night for NEC. With no runs being initiated in the final quarter, the Saints will prevail and win their second game of the season 15-10.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • NEC freshman goalkeeper Nate Finn (Norwood, Mass.) racked up 12 nice saves on the evening.
  • Emmanuel senior goalkeeper Eric Anderson (Sparta, N.J.) tallied an eventful seven saves in the win.
  • The 'Grims were led by Pfeifle once again with his second double-hat-trick of the season containing six goals.
  • Saints' Mehlhorn stood out slightly in a solid team effort as he recorded three goals to go with three assists, two ground balls, and a caused turnover.
  • Emmanuel outshot NEC fairly 38-22.
  • The Saints narrowly won the faceoff battle 14-12.
  • NEC was solid on clear attempts, going 18/21 while Emmanuel went a perfect 20/20.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the field on Saturday, April 6th when they face the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) on the road at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex at 11:00 AM.
  • Emmanuel hosts their next game against Elms College as part of their senior day on the Roberto Clemente Field on April 6th at 12:00 PM.
