Baseball Wraps Up 2024 Season Against Rivier

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College baseball team closed out the team's inaugural season in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with a pair of losses to Rivier University on Sunday at Laurie Cox Memorial Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

GAME 1
Score: Rivier University 8, New England College 5
Records: Raiders 9-22, 5-10 GNAC | Pilgrims 6-27, 4-11 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the Raiders put a run across in the top of the first, and another on a passed ball in the third, Rivier broke open a five-run lead on a three-run home run by first-year infielder Sebastien Reis (Fall River, Mass.).
  • Down 5-0, freshman outfielder Jason Figuereo (Lynn, Mass.) led off the bottom of the third with a walk and would advance to second on a wild pitch. The freshman would then score from second on a single through the left side from graduate infielder Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.).
  • In the fifth, hot-hitting junior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) would lead off with a single to left field before later coming around to score on an infield single from fellow team captain senior infielder Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) to make it a 5-2 game.
  • With runners on first and second in the sixth, it was again Philibotte who came through with an RBI double to score Figuereo and bring the Pilgrims within two runs.
  • Just as NEC pulled within striking distance, Rivier loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh, ultimately scoring two insurance runs on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to go up 7-3.
  • With one out in the eighth, Figuereo and Worth reached on back-to-back singles to put two runners on for Philibotte. Philibotte would deliver with his third hit of the day, a two-run single to bring the 'Grims back within two runs. However, later in the inning, the NEC rally would get cut short on an inning-ending pick off at first base.
  • The Raiders would load the bases in the ninth and add one more run on a hit-by-pitch to take a three-run lead into the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore pitcher Ty Baker (Hudson, N.H.) would work around a hit-by-pitch to hold the 'Grims scoreless in the ninth to secure the four-out save.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Rivier starter, sophomore Anthony Morro (Durham, Conn.), threw six innings for the Raiders while allowing three runs (two earned) and 14 baserunners. Morro punched out six and earned his third win of the season. Meanwhile, Baker collected his fourth save of the season in relief.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Stephen Dunham (Manchester, N.H.) went seven and two-thirds innings for the 'Grims, allowing seven earned runs while making it into the eighth inning for the second time in his last three starts. The senior struck out four batters and was dealt the loss.
  • Philibotte went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored while adding two stolen bases. With his double in the bottom of the sixth inning, the shortstop reached the 100-hit plateau.
  • Figuereo reached base in all four plate appearances, collecting his seventh multi-hit game in the month of April and walking twice. The rookie scored three of the team's five runs in game one.

GAME 2
Score: Rivier University 16, New England College 5
Records: Raiders 10-22, 6-10 GNAC | Pilgrims 6-28, 4-12 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After both teams scored a run in the first, the Raiders jumped out to a 7-1 lead following a six-run third inning. NEC would manage to get two runs back in the bottom of the inning, as Philibotte led off with a double and scored on a Patnode single. Three batters later, graduate infielder Cooper Ribaudo (Salem, N.H.) would smack a double curving toward the right field line to drive in Patnode.
  • Rivier would add four more runs in the top of the fourth inning, one in the fifth, three in the sixth, and one more in the seventh to establish a dominant 13 run-lead. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore infielder David Spigel (Portsmouth, R.I.) would reach on an infield single while driving in sophomore outfielder Harold Martinez (Wethersfield, Conn.). One batter later, Figuereo would come home to score on a double play ball to cement the final score of 16-5, Rivier.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • First-year Sean Kuhloff (Bedford, N.H.) started on the mound for Rivier, going six innings of three-run ball while earning the win. Sophomore Christopher Chagnon (Portsmouth, R.I.) was dealt the loss for NEC.
  • Reis hit his second three-run home run of the day in the fourth inning, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored in game two. Junior outfielder Luis Colon (Lawrence, Mass.) accrued four RBIs on four hits and scored twice.
