The Bats Come Alive for Baseball in Dominate GNAC Win Over Elms

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College baseball team secured a convincing win on the day against visiting Elms College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday at Laurie Cox Memorial Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score:                    Elms College 3, New England College 19
Records:               Blazers 16-18, 6-8 GNAC | Pilgrims 6-23, 4-8 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half of the first inning was solid by senior right-handed pitcher Stephen Dunham (Manchester, N.H.) as he made quick work of the Blazers only letting up one hit but managed to secure two swinging strikeouts with no runs scored in the process.
  • In the bottom of the first was where a resurgence in the batting efforts of the 'Grims transpired with NEC firing on all cylinders starting out as junior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) singled to the shortstop to get himself on base. The next batter senior infielder Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) hit a single into the middle of the field running over to second base after a fielding error was made aiding Philibote to make his way down to third having two 'Grims on base. Errors made by the Blazers continued to pile up allowing for another batter in senior infielder Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) to reach getting Patnode to third as well as scoring Philibotte for the one run lead.
  • With no outs yet, graduate infielder Tyler Gendron (Milford, N.H.) smacked a RBI single into up the middle for Patnode to score another run. After that play made by Gendron NEC executed another three consecutive RBI singles credited to graduate infielder Cooper Ribaudo (Salem, N.H.), sophomore outfielder Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.), and graduate catcher Aaron Robertson (Weare, N.H.) awarding the team another three additional runs making the score 5-0 in favor of NEC. The team still remained hot during this inning as graduate infielder Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.) would bash a two run RBI double out to left center field making for the lead to be stretched out seven runs. The 'Grims would tack on two more runs coming in before things would finally cease.
  • After that the no scoring on either side would occur but that would come to a halt by the bottom of the fourth as Philibotte would make contact with the ball during his at bat for a single then having Patnode get struck by a hit by pitch advances Philibotte to second. A wild pitch gets thrown by the Blazers during Cannavo's at bat that would end in him hitting the next two run RBI expanding on their lead, 11-0.
  • Top of the sixth inning EC would finally stop the bleeding made by NEC with junior Blake Bastos (Minela, N.Y.) committing the sacrifice fly helping them score with the runner being previously on third as sophomore outfielder Christopher Chagnon (Portsmouth, R.I.) escaped the inning only allowing one run with the bases being loaded at a point in time during the inning.
  • The bottom of the sixth was another onslaught put together strengthening their outing making the performance they displayed more dominate earning an impressive seven runs, 19-1. Elms going into the top of the seventh saw the end in sight but didn't want to go out quietly with two outs dealt to their side still managed to double into right field scoring two runs but it wouldn't be enough to come back from the deficit brought upon them ending in a much needed GNAC win for the 'Grims, 19-3 in convincing fashion.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC Dunham would be bestowed the win on the day concluding with the senior earning five strikeouts after allowing no runs to be scored during his five-inning appearance on the mound.
  •  EC senior Vinny Buono (Springfield, Mass.) takes the loss for the Blazers.
  • It was a big day for the 'Grims getting back into the groove of hitting gathering 17 hits compared to the Blazers six.
  • NEC Philibotte shined the brightest for the 'Grims having three runs, three hits, and two RBI's.
  • EC senior Justin Miller (Prospect, Conn.) did all he could for the Blazers ending with two hits and two RBI's.
