NASHUA, N.H. – The New England College women's lacrosse team lost in a tough outing on the road at Rivier University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Joanne Merrill Field in Nashua, New Hampshire.
THE BASICS
Score: New England College 5, Rivier University 12
Records: Pilgrims 3-5, 1-3 GNAC | Raiders 4-4, 1-3 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rivier opened up with the game's first three goals including the latter two coming from junior midfielder Sarah Lachance (Chelmsford, Mass.) in which she and freshman attacker Sofia Cebrero (Hudson, N.H.) were able to get relatively close to the opposing goal off a passive offense and allowing each score coming from a crisp straight shot.
- The 'Grims would halt the Raiders' scoring run with two of their own as graduate midfielder Cassie Kelly (Alexandria, Minn.) dodged her way into position and powered one in to put her team up on the board. Right after on the subsequent draw control, senior attacker Jacqueline Nee (Manchester, N.H.) struck in the goal from a quick run-out pass by sophomore attacker Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.). Rivier would get another score in with 2:37 remaining to put the home team up 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
- In period number two, Rivier kept their momentum going by putting in two straight goals to build a comfortable lead headlined by Cebrero who faked out the opposition to sneak in the goal followed by a free-position goal from Lachance to add to her outstanding day. With 1:41 left, NEC's Kelly would yet again stop the run from getting too out of hand as she put in a free-position goal of her own to head into halftime down 6-3.
- Out of the break, Lachance would ignite another run for the Raiders where she let off an unbalanced shot that cruised past the visiting goaltender giving her fourth goal of the day. Then soon after Rivier's senior midfielder Caitlin Newell (Litchfield, N.H.) burst onto the scene by scoring two goals within 29 seconds of game time to build on the lead. The 'Grims would then have sophomore midfielder Mackenzie McDonald (Boscawen, N.H.) contribute to their comeback efforts where she came out from nowhere by receiving a behind-the-net assist from senior attacker Nathalie Antigua (North Brunswick, N.J.) to strike the ball in to end the third period of play down 9-4.
- Just like how it went in the quarters prior, the fourth did not see any contrast as Rivier's Cebrero, Lachance, and junior attacker Rachel Hinkley (Swedesboro, N.J.) each put in their final shots into the net that would eventually give the Raiders their first GNAC conference win of the season. NEC would get one more score on the board from Kelly who took a solidly contested shot that flew in and would be the final goal of the day as the home Rivier takes the in-state win 12-5.
