NEW LONDON, CONN. – The New England College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Mitchell College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Alumni Field in New London, Connecticut.
GAME 1
Score: New England College 1, Mitchell College 4
Records: Pilgrims 2-14, 1-1 GNAC | Mariners 13-6, 4-0 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) opened the game up with a lead-off single through the left side of the infield before advancing to second and then third on a pair of Mitchell mistakes. An opposite field single off the bat of senior infielder Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) would open up the scoring – plating Philibotte and giving NEC the early 1-0 lead.
- Mitchell would kick off the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff single of their own. They would follow it up with another single, by senior Angel Galindez (Carolina, P.R.), but an NEC error in the outfield would allow the runner to score all the way from first base. Galindez would advance to third on the error with no outs, but NEC would keep him there as they retired the next three batters in order.
- In the third, a two-out walk would loom large as a single and subsequent NEC error in the outfield would allow another Mitchell baserunner to score all the way from first base.
- The sixth inning would see the Mariners add an insurance run, as a triple by senior Justin Adorno (New Britain, Conn.) would plate the team's third run of the game. In the eighth, Mitchell would have two on with two out, and a single by Galindez would give the Mariners a 4-1 lead, a score that would hold through the rest of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Starting for Mitchell, senior Camren Varney (Manchester, N.H.) managed to settle in for the Mariners, going seven innings with just the one run allowed while striking out six. Sophomore Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) struck out four over two clean innings to earn the save.
- On the mound for the 'Grims, senior right-handed pitcher Stephen Dunham (Manchester, N.H.) suffered the loss while giving up just two unearned runs across five innings. Senior left-handed pitcher Nolan Stoney (Bedford, N.H.) pitched three innings of relief, yielding two earned runs.
GAME 2
Score: New England College 3, Mitchell College 10
Records: Pilgrims 2-15, 1-2 GNAC | Mariners 14-6, 5-0 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the second half of the doubleheader, it was Mitchell that opened the scoring – this time in the bottom of the second. The hosts pushed four runs across in the inning on a pair of infield singles, a hit-by-pitch, and three walks. Mitchell would add two more runs in the fourth, followed by three in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
- In the top of the seventh, freshman outfielder Jason Figuereo (Lynn, Mass.) and sophomore outfielder Noah Winship (Rochester, N.H.) both reached on back-to-back walks, before a Mitchell error placed a Pilgrim on every base. Freshman catcher Alex Velasco (Lynn, Mass.) would show a patient approach and be rewarded with an RBI walk to put the 'Grims in the run column. Two batters later, freshman outfielder Kaiden Dowse (Colebrook, N.H.) would walk in another run. With the bases still loaded, senior catcher AJ Desarro (Longmeadow, Mass.) would keep the rally going with an RBI single to left field. Finally, the Mariners would force a pop-up in foul territory to put an end to the seven-inning game – claiming the second half of the doubleheader by a score of 10-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-
Sophomore Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) earned the win after throwing five scoreless innings, allowing just four baserunners and garnering five punchouts. Starting opposite Sestokas, sophomore Christopher Chagnon (Portsmouth, R.I.) took the loss for the 'Grims, going the full six innings.
-
Galindez led Mitchell with four hits on the day, collecting two in each game, while sophomore Savier Page (Wethersfield, Conn.) hit his first career home run in game two of the doubleheader.
-
For NEC, both Velasco and Dowse collected their first career RBIs, while Desarro went 2-for-3 in his first start of the season behind the plate. Junior infielder Tyler Fenton (Wilmington, Mass.) added the team's other hit in the nightcap.
