HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's ice hockey team dropped the second half of a back-to-back weekend against visiting UMass-Boston on Saturday afternoon at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.
THE BASICS
Score: UMass-Boston 3, New England College 1
Records: Beacons 2-2, 2-0 NEHC | Pilgrims 0-5, 0-2 NEHC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After being held scoreless the night before by the Beacons, the Pilgrims quickly made sure that would not be the case today. Midway through the first period, junior forward Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.) streaked down the ice and slapped in her third goal of the season. Freshman defenders Greta Grant (Brownfield, Maine) and Dorte Solheim (Bergen, Norway) were credited with their first career assists on the goal to put the 'Grims up 1-0.
- The Beacons would later respond with two goals in the remainder of the first period. Erin Duffy (Cromwell, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal at the 11:47 mark to tie up the contest, and Jenna Fitzsimmons (Ashland, Mass.) would put the visitors on top with four minutes to go in the opening period.
- Just as with last night, a scoreless second period from both teams set the stage for the third. Power plays created scoring opportunities for both teams, but it was the Beacons who came through with a goal to cushion their lead. Katie Wilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa.) capitalized on an NEC penalty and scored to ultimately give the Beacons the 3-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- NEC sophomore goaltender Lucy Armour (Falmouth, Mass.) made 35 saves; a new single-game career best.
