McCamish Powers Field Hockey to GNAC Two-Seed

HENNIKER, N.H. – As a heavy fog descended upon Don Melander Field, the New England College field hockey team took destiny into their own hands with a 1-0 win over visiting Lasell University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday evening in Henniker, New Hampshire. With the victory, the Pilgrims claim sole possession of the two-seed the upcoming GNAC playoffs by virtue of their tie-breaker over Simmons University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half, the 'Grims finally got on the board midway through the third quarter when NEC junior forward Cristina Manzi (Peapack, N.J.) found senior midfielder Meaghan McCamish (Warwick, R.I.) for her team-leading 15th goal of the season to take a 1-0 lead.
  • With 12.5 seconds left in the fourth, the Lasers were awarded a penalty corner with a chance to tie the game. But NEC sophomore midfielder Neila Jones (Rowley, Mass.) knocked the ball away in the closing seconds to leave Lasell scoreless, give NEC the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC junior goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) tallied six saves on the night for the Pilgrims, picking up her fourth shutout of the season. At press time, the third-year netminder leads the GNAC in save percentage.
  • Lasell senior goalkeeper Courtney Tello (Nashua, N.H.) finished with eight stops in net for the Lasers.
  • NEC outshot Lasell, 16-11, with a 16-10 advantage in corners.
  • Lasell senior midfielder Paige Jette (Enfield, N.H.) finished with a team-best four shots for the Lasers.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Saturday when they play host to Lasell in the first round of the GNAC Championship Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Don Melander Field.
