Men’s Soccer Suffers Tough Loss to Blue Jays on Senior Day

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College men's soccer team fell against visiting University of Saint Joseph (CT) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score: Univ. of Saint Joseph 3, New England College 1
Records: Blue Jays 10-4-3, 9-1-3 GNAC | Pilgrims 4-7-6, 3-6-5 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game remained in a scoreless standstill until the 26th minute when the Blue Jays were granted a penalty shot after a foul occurred inside the Pilgrim's box. The team's leading scorer, Henry McGarrah V (Hartford, Conn.), took the PK and came through for the game's first goal.
  • In the 40th minute, NEC looked to score the equalizer just before the half and received a corner kick after a shot by sophomore midfielder Santiago Sanchez (Guatemala City, Guatemala) was blocked and sent out of bounds by the Blue Jays. Sanchez took the corner and found freshman center back Levi Campbell (Goffstown, N.H.) who for the second straight game sent a header into the back of the net for a 'Grims goal.
  • The matchup would remain at 1-1 until the 72nd minute when a shot off the foot by Justin Cardinale (Wolcott, Conn.) slipped through the hands of senior goalkeeper Hayden Walker (Manchester, N.H.) to suddenly put Saint Joseph up one with under 20 minutes to play. 10 minutes later, the Blue Jays would make it a 3-1 advantage on a goal from Mario Milardo (Middletown, Conn.) from point-blank range.
  • In the 83rd minute, sophomore forward Chase Gurtowsky (Torrington, Conn.) drew a foul in the Jays' box and granted NEC a penalty shot of their own with an opportunity to pull within a goal. Senior midfielder Darren Mota (Inverness, Scotland) took the PK but was denied by the keeper who made a strong save to keep the 3-1 score intact.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Walker stopped six shots for NEC, while Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) made six saves for the visitors.
  • USJ took 23 shots with nine coming on net, while NEC put 7/10 shots on goal.
  • The Blue Jays took five corners to the Pilgrims' three.
  • This was a physical and chippy game as the two teams combined for a total of six cards.

SENIOR DAY

  • Prior to the game, the New England College men's soccer program and the NEC athletics department recognized this year's senior class as part of senior day. Walker, Mota, forwards Logan Burns (Marshfield, Mass.) and Anthony Ruggiero (Hooksett, N.H.), midfielders William Scala (Manchester, N.H.) and Panayiotis Kostakis (Manchester, N.H.), and outside backs Brian Lam (Londonderry, Vt.) and Nathan Day (Hudson, N.H.) were all honored by coaches, teammates, family members, and fans for all of their accomplishments at NEC both on and off the field. Although their time with the program may be coming to an end, they will forever be a part of the 'Grims family.

UP NEXT

  • NEC has concluded its regular season schedule and awaits results from elsewhere in the GNAC to determine the postseason bracket.
