THE BASICS
Score: New England College 2, Worcester State University 0
Records: Pilgrims 5-16-0, 1-14-0 NEHC | Lancers 6-11-1, 4-1-1 ECHA
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening period of play was dominated by graduate goaltender Hannah Podvey (West Caldwell, N.J.) who amassed 14 saves in the first period to keep the Lancers off the scoreboard.
- 8:26 into the second period, junior forward Becca Pouliot (Berlin, N.H.) sent the puck into a crowd in front of the Worcester State net, where graduate forward Cassie Kelly (Alexandria, Minn.) got her stick on the puck before finally freshman forward Alexis Hornsby (Atkinson, N.H.) snuck the puck past the opposing goalie to put the 'Grims up 1-0.
- Holding onto a one goal lead, NEC looked to take advantage of an early third-period power play. Kelly received the puck around center ice and streaked down the left side, beating three Worcester State defenders before wrapping the puck around the outstretched goaltender for a beautiful goal. Hornsby would be credited with an assist on the goal that would extend the Pilgrim lead to 2-0, a lead that would not be squandered over the final 15 minutes of play.
