Women’s Volleyball Stumbles to Roger Williams

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's volleyball team lost in four sets to visiting Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon at Bridges Gymnasium in Henniker, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score:                    Roger Williams 3, New England College 1 (25-15, 29-27, 18-25, 25-12)
Records:               Pilgrims 6-8, 1-3 GNAC | Eagles 4-9, 0-1 CCC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Errors doomed the Pilgrims in the first set, as 12 attack errors, three service errors and three reception errors gave the Eagles the opening stanza. In the second, NEC was trailing 22-14 before storming back on an 11-2 run, including sophomore setter Aurora Gutierrez-Macias (El Paso, Tex.) holding serve for five points. With the 'Grims poised to tie it up with set point, a costly ball-handling error let the visitors push it into extras, ultimately prevailing 29-27.
  • In the third set, the 'Grims led end-to-end, capitalizing on a series of kills and blocks by senior middle-blocker Tatiana Sampson (Kailua, Hawaii) before holding off a late rally by the Eagles. But the visitors came to play in the fourth to close out the match.

  • NEC senior outside hitter Renee McBride-Rogers (Midwest City, Okla.) led the 'Grims with eight kills and five block assists.
