LEXINGTON, Mass. - The New England College softball team wrapped up regular season play with a pair of dominant victories over Lesley University on Saturday in Lexington, Massachusetts in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action.
Game 1:
Score: New England College 10, Lesley University 1
Records: Pilgrims 15-20, 5-6 NECC | Lynx 3-34, 0-11 NECC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pilgrims got on the board early with two runs in the first inning, capped off by an RBI double by first-year outfielder Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.). After a couple of one-run innings, NEC would lead 4-1 after four.
- Entering the fifth inning, the 'Grims would add to their lead with a two-run home run to deep left field off the bat of senior first baseman Taylor Maher (Piscataway, N.J.).
- New England College would follow that up with a four-spot in the sixth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from first-year outfielder Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) and Maher, to expand the lead to 10-1. Starting pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) would down the Lynx in order in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game after six innings via mercy rule.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Maher dominated game one, hitting a home run and a double as part of a three-for-four performance with four RBIs and one run scored.
- Giesler also went three-for-four from the leadoff spot, while scoring three runs and driving in one.
- Olson earned the win for the 'Grims, throwing a complete game while allowing just one earned run and striking out four.
- Samantha Mecklenburg (Hobart, Wis.) started for Lesley and took the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pilgrims picked up right where they left off in game two, as Geisler started the second game with a walk, before graduate third baseman Destiny Helmedach (Middlefield, Conn.) smacked a home run to straightaway center field. The 'Grims would add three more in the inning, two off wild pitches and then an RBI single by the game one starter, Olson.
- The early five-run lead would shrink to two after the Lynx added three runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning.
- NEC would respond with some more offense of their own, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning, concluded by an RBI double by senior catcher Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.).
- After a leadoff double by Helmedach in the fourth, singles by Maher, senior outfielder Monica Andrade (Escondido, Calif.), and Olson, would culminate in a three-run inning. Lesley would add two more runs in the bottom-half of the inning, bringing the score to 10-5.
- In the top of the seventh, Olson would single, steal second, and later score on a single by first-year second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.). After Lemay stole second, she would get driven home on a single by Gagne. Gagne would then steal both second and third, and score on a Geisler groundout. Lesley would have no answer, as the 'Grims would complete the sweep with a 13-5 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Helmedach went three-for-five in game two with her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
- After a strong pitching performance in game one, Olson reached base four times with two RBIs, two runs scored, and three stolen bases.
- Gagne went two-for-four with three stolen bases, two runs batted in, and scored once.
- Junior Jocelin Vachon (Manchester, N.H.) started on the mound for NEC and went two innings before being relieved by senior Naomi Medrano (Escondido, Calif.) who went one-and-a-third innings. Graduate student Emily Farone (Sandown, N.H.) would throw two and two-thirds shutout innings before giving way to first-year pitcher Houstyn McConaghy (Lincoln, R.I.) who threw a scoreless seventh to secure the win.
- Lesley starting pitcher, sophomore Emma Hodgkins (Raymond, N.H.), went the distance for the Lynx but took the loss.
- The Pilgrims were running wild on the basepaths, ending game two with thirteen stolen bases, for a combined twenty stolen bases on the afternoon.
