Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Panthers

HOLDERNESS, N.H. - The New England College baseball team traveled to Plymouth State University for an out-of-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Parish Field in Holderness, New Hampshire, winning the first game 12-2 before dropping the second 8-5.

Game One:
Score: New England College 12, Plymouth State 2
Records: Pilgrims 12-18 | Panthers 9-16

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Pilgrims put up two runs in the top half of the first inning, scoring on RBI singles by senior designated hitter Sylvain Audet (Springfield, Mass.) and senior second baseman Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.). NEC would one-up that effort in the third when Worth delivered an RBI double followed up by a two-run single by junior catcher Aaron Robertson (Weare, N.H.) to extend the lead to 5-0.

  • The 'Grims would really put the game away in a six-run-fourth inning capped off by RBI singles by both Worth and Robertson. The Panthers would score a run in both the fourth and fifth innings but never threatened the Pilgrims' lead. An RBI groundout by junior infielder Colin Shaw (Colebrook, N.H.) made for a final score of 12-2, 'Grims.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • NEC's starting pitcher Alex Perez (Leominster, Mass.) and reliever Tim Krol (East Longmeadow, Mass.) each threw two perfect innings with five strikeouts a-piece. Junior Ryan Hughes (Northwood, N.H.) threw three innings of relief, allowing one earned run and earning the win.
  • PSU's starter, Sam Dyckman (Whitefield, N.H.), allowed seven earned runs over three-and-one-third innings while taking the loss for the home team.
  • Worth led the way for the 'Grims, going a perfect three-for-three with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Game Two:
Score: New England College 5, Plymouth State 8
Records: Pilgrims 12-19 | Panthers 10-16

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Plymouth State found their groove offensively early in game two, scoring two runs in the first and four more in the second. Finding themselves in a quick 6-0 deficit, the Pilgrims lineup struggled to replicate their game one success until the fifth inning when junior catcher JD Normand (Auburn, N.H.) drove in a pair of runs on a double to center field.

  • As the Panthers limited the damage to just two runs, they would add insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to regain their six-run lead going into the seventh and final inning.

  • Down by six, the 'Grims needed a rally. The team's first three baserunners of the inning all reached base, with the pinch-hitting Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) scoring on a PSU wild pitch. Now 8-3, sophomore outfielder Kyle Dobrie hit an RBI groundout to first base, scoring senior infielder Devin Parsons (Salisbury, Mass.). An RBI single by Normand to score senior outfielder Luca Giallongo (Mt. Shasta, Calif.) would cut the lead to three. However, Plymouth State would record two straight outs to cut the rally short and take game two, 8-5.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • After a stellar performance at the plate in the first game, Worth got the start for the Pilgrims and went two innings while allowing five earned runs. Junior Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) provided long relief for NEC, throwing three innings with three strikeouts and one run allowed.
  • Freshman Ryan Fogell (Coventry, R.I.) started for Plymouth State and threw two shutout innings before giving way to sophomore Ryan Williams (Merrimack, N.H.) who went three innings and earned the win.
  • Normand went two-for-four with three runs batted in as the lone Pilgrims with multiple hits in the nightcap.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the field on Friday as they return home to host a doubleheader against Colby-Sawyer College set to start at 1:30 PM.
