THE BASICS
Score: New England College 67, Plymouth State 78
Records: Pilgrims 4-4, 0-0 GNAC | Panthers 4-2, 0-0 LEC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams stayed close throughout the first quarter, with a three-pointer by senior guard Alissia Corona (Wylie, Tex.) with 13 seconds remaining to bring the 'Grims within one point, 16-15 Plymouth State.
- The second quarter saw the Panthers take their one-point lead and turn it into a 10-point advantage, going into halftime leading 35-25. Plymouth junior guard Brianna Wilcox (Londonderry, N.H.) would score 9 of her team's 19 points in the quarter.
- Just as the Panthers dominated the second quarter, it was the Pilgrims who took control in the third. NEC doubled up Plymouth in the quarter, shooting 70 percent from the field while holding the Panthers to just 28.6 percent shooting. The two teams would take a 45-45 score into the final quarter.
- Both teams were finding success in an intense back-and-forth fourth quarter that saw nine lead changes. With just 20 seconds left, senior guard Juliana Hernandez (McFarland, Calif.) would sink a free throw to give NEC a two-point lead. But a turnaround jumper by Plymouth freshman forward Ashley Stephens (Pembroke, N.H.) with 10 seconds left would send the game to overtime.
- However, in overtime, it would be the Panthers who would pull away – closing the game out on a 11-2 run – to secure the 78-67 victory.
