Field Hockey Ends Season in GNAC Semifinals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The New England College field hockey team saw their 2023 season come to an end on Wednesday evening in the semifinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship Tournament with a 1-0 loss to top-seeded Johnson & Wales University at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex in Providence, Rhode Island.

THE BASICS
Score:                    New England College 0, Johnson & Wales 1
Records:               Pilgrims 13-8 | Wildcats 16-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • NEC, playing as the fifth seed, gave Johnson & Wales a fight throughout the game. Wildcat freshman forward Rayne Millett (Lynn, Mass.) scored her 11th goal of the season midway through the third quarter to break a scoreless tie that proved to be the difference-maker of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC sophomore goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.), who earlier this season earned GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week honors after a dominant performance over Johnson & Wales, was again brilliant against the Wildcats, tallying ten saves on the day against a team that averages near four goals a game. At press time, Anderson ranks third in the GNAC in save percentage, fifth in goals-against-average and sixth in total saves.
  • JWU freshman goalkeeper Sophia Brea (Windham, N.H.) picked up the win with four saves.
  • The Pilgrims advanced to the GNAC semifinals in just their first season in the league. Their win over the Wildcats on October 10th was Johnson & Wales first regular season loss in conference play in more than two years.
UP NEXT
  • Congratulations to the whole team on the conclusion of their season.
