Men’s Soccer Falls Early to Wildcats in Quarterfinals, Ends Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The #7 seed New England College men's soccer team was held scoreless at the #2 seed Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex in Providence, R.I.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 0, Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) 2
Records: Pilgrims 9-7-4, 6-5-3 GNAC | Wildcats 12-2-4, 10-1-3 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • JWU's first goal of the game came at the 11' mark when junior midfielder Conner Elliot (Mansfield, Mass.) put in a header off of a free kick from graduate defender Alexander Pane (Danbury, Conn.).
  • The Wildcats' second and final goal of the game was still in the first half at the 27' mark when Pane continued to make his presence felt as he curved in a goal from NEC's own endline that was out of their reach.
  • The momentum of the game stayed the same in the 2nd half but without any more goals as JWU would eventually win the quarterfinal game 2-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • 'Grims junior goalkeeper Hayden Walker (Manchester, N.H.) played all 90 minutes in the loss while coming away with four saves.
  • Wildcats graduate goalkeeper Jacob Friedman did not see much action on his end of the field the whole game as he tallied only two saves.
  • JWU outshot NEC by a wide margin of 18-4.
  • The Wildcats were able to get down the field more often than their opponent as they had nine corner kicks compared to 'Grims' two.

UP NEXT

  • This will end the NEC men's soccer season as they were picked 7th in the GNAC Preseason Poll and remained at that spot at the end of the regular season. From here, the 'Grims will look forward to year two of the GNAC era. Congratulations to the whole team on their hard-fought season.
  • With the win, Johnson & Wales will play in the semifinals at the #3 seed University of Saint Joseph (CT) Tuesday, October 31st with the start time to be determined.
