Field Hockey Upsets Undefeated Johnson & Wales in Overtime

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College field hockey team pulled off a dramatic upset of visiting Johnson & Wales University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday evening at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score: Johnson & Wales 0, New England College 1
Records: Wildcats 11-1, 7-1 GNAC | Pilgrims 7-6, 6-3 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In a back-and-forth first half, both teams showed off their defensive prowess, holding each of the opposing offenses scoreless for the first 30 minutes of play. Sophomore goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) had a strong first half, stopping all six shots faced.
  • The 0-0 tie continued out of the half, neither team budging in the third quarter. Anderson would again have a big quarter, making five more saves for the 'Grims.
  • 3:23 into the fourth quarter, the Wildcats threatened to score. After Anderson attempted a diving save, the ball found its way behind the keeper, but a defensive save by junior defender Emma Favorite (Manchester, N.H.) preserved the scoreless battle.
  • Late in the final quarter of regulation, NEC would make Johnson & Wales goalkeeper Sophia Brea (Windham, N.H.) work, after the freshman had only faced 12 shots on goal in 11 games on the season. The 'Grims fired off three shots on net in the final ten minutes, but the keeper denied them all.
  • Advancing to overtime, still deadlocked at zero, the Wildcats, who had yet to allow a single goal in conference play this season, would see that changed, when graduate forward Drea Chin (Laconia, N.H.) drove around the defender deep in JWU territory and found sophomore forward Martina Hill (Abbot, Maine) directly in front of the net for the game-winning goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The game-winner was Hill's third goal of the season, while Chin is now tied for the team lead with six assists.
  • The Pilgrims handed the Wildcats their first conference loss since September 11th, 2021.
  • Anderson had a dominant game in net for the 'Grims, shutting out the Wildcats while making 12 saves.
  • Brea stopped three shots for the visitors while taking her first loss of the season.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the field on Thursday when they continue their homestand on Thursday for a 7:00 PM non-conference game against the University of Southern Maine.
  • JWU plays their next game at Lasell University on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
