HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College women's soccer team battled through rainy conditions Monday night, securing a 1-0 non-conference victory over Nichols College
The Pilgrims tested the Bison defense early, with junior Abbey Keyes (Dedham, Mass.) and freshman Mia Cross (Derry, N.H. ) each putting shots on target that were turned aside by Nichols goalkeeper Emily Dougenik. Junior Julianna Barrett (Orange, Conn.) collected a rebound off Dougenik and fired it into the back of the net to give the 'Grims an early 1-0 lead. Nichols continued to apply pressure throughout the opening half, but sophomore goalkeeper Estrella Michaelidis (Dedham, Mass.) came up with several key saves to keep the Bison off the scoreboard and preserve NEC's 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The Bison continued to generate offensive pressure in the second half, putting multiple shots on target, but Michaelidis remained steady in net, turning aside each attempt. NEC looked to add to its lead with shots from Barrett and Keyes, both of which were stopped by Dougenik. The two teams battled in the midfield late in the contest as Nichols searched for the equalizer. Michaelidis stood firm in the final minutes, making the necessary saves to secure the shutout and seal the 1-0 victory for the Pilgrims.
Nichols held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal, while both teams recorded six corner kicks. Michaelidis finished the night with 11 saves, while Dougenik recorded five saves for the Bison.
The 'Grims return to the pitch Wednesday, traveling to Nashua for a 6:00 PM matchup against conference foe Rivier.
